Chess Club (Top of Page)
Great news from the Virginia Scholastic & Collegiate Championships: our chess team won 8th place out of 22 teams in K-3 session. This is an annual state wide chess championship. There are over 400 students who played in the championship held at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg last weekend.

The Twin Hickory team had three members playing in the tournament. With 100+ players in the K-3 session, Jacob Thomas won 4th place trophy, Nathan Wu won 9th place trophy and Nicholas won 72nd place. We're so proud of them. Congratulation to Jacob, Nathan and Nicholas!!! You all did a fabulous job!!!

Earth Savers (Top of Page)
We have added a new recycling program in the cafeteria! Terra Cycle program. This program collects used Capri Sun and Honest Kids drink pouches and Frito Lay snack/chip bags. We send these to a company and they donate $.02 for each pouch or bag to a charity or school of our choice. If you are interested in more information, you can follow this link http://www.terracycle.net/brigades/1-Drink-Pouch-Brigade . There is a designated area in the cafeteria to deposit these materials

Central Virginia Waste Management Authority CVWMA, will hold an electronic recycling event at the Ukrops on John Rolfe Parkway from 9-2 on April 24. We will gather items in the carpool loop at Twin Hickory from 9-11 and transport goods for you. If you want to bring your items, please check this link for guidelines. We will take anything that does not require a fee. http://www.cvwma.com/recycling_programs/electronics.wbp

We are continuing to gather used tennis shoes in a box located in the school lobby. We donate these to a program called One World Running. Shoes in good condition go to a person in need and other are ground up and made into running tracks.

Field Day, May 28th, is going to have a GO GREEN! theme this year. Our club is excited to be a part of making this day a great success!

Earth Week is April 19-23rd. We will have activities for the week. To prepare yourself, start saving coins for our 3rd annual Time for Change drive sponsored by World Wildlife Fund. Each class will gather change and the winning class receives prize. We also encourage a litter less lunch day. You can prepare for that by visiting www.wrapnmat.com to find a new way to pack your sandwich each day. More details to follow.

Grounds and Beautification (Top of Page)
I am pleased to report that the weather cooperated 100% on Saturday and thanks to our many volunteers we had a very successful beautification event. We made great progress in the first couple hours with plantings and mulch and were largely complete by 3:00. Following our work, the beds now traverse the entire schoolfront and I believe make the school significantly more inviting.

While I hope everyone will soon be able to see the finished product in person, I have attached the following link to pictures of the areas completed Saturday. For reference, I also included some before pictures as well.

Many thanks to our parent and Key Club volunteers as well as Lowe's & Colesville Nursery for their support of plant material and supplies at cost. If you have opportunity to support these businesses, please do so as they have really come through for our school!
